Money Piece aftercare: what to do in the first 72 hours
By Blue Vanity Salon | July 20, 2026
One of our favorite things to hear after a color appointment is that you’re getting compliments. Keep them coming by following one rule first: don’t shampoo for 48–72 hours. That wait time helps your Money Piece settle so your face-framing brightness stays clean and even, especially in Scottsdale where sun, sweat, and pool time can push highlights brassy fast.

Quick reminder on the service: our Money Piece focuses on face-framing highlights that brighten your appearance, and we finish with a blowout and style so you leave looking done, not half-finished.
Your first 24–48 hours: the do’s and don’ts that save your tone
1) Skip shampoo. We generally recommend waiting 48–72 hours before your first wash. If your hairline feels a little product-y from styling, that’s normal after a blowout. Try a light brush-through and let it be for now.
2) Keep water off the front. Avoid getting the face-framing pieces soaked in the shower. If you need to rinse your body, clip your hair up and keep steam low. Hot steam plus freshly lightened pieces can make them feel drier faster.
3) Put workouts on “easy mode.” Heavy sweating in the first 72 hours (hot yoga, sauna, long outdoor runs) can speed fading around the hairline. Scottsdale heat is no joke. If you do move your body, keep it lighter and cool down fast.
4) No pool, no hot tub. Chlorine and fresh highlights don’t mix. Give your Money Piece the full 72-hour buffer before you swim, especially during pool season in Scottsdale Airpark.
If you take nothing else from this post: wait 48–72 hours to shampoo, and keep sweat and chlorine away in that window. It’s the easiest way to keep your face-framing highlight crisp.
Days 3–7: keep the “bright and beautiful” look without over-washing
Once you hit day three, you can go back to normal life, just a little smarter. A Money Piece sits right where sun hits first and where you touch your hair the most. That’s why the first week matters.
Sun and pool rules that matter in Scottsdale
Desert UV plus chlorine is the fastest route to warmth and brassiness around the face. If you’re going to be outside for a while, treat your Money Piece like you treat your skin. Use a UV protectant spray and consider a hat when you know you’ll be in direct sun. If you’re swimming after that first 72 hours, wet your hair with clean water first and apply conditioner before you get in. It helps reduce how much pool water gets absorbed.
Keep hands and heat off the front pieces
The front strands are usually the most delicate. Try not to tug at them, twist them when you’re thinking, or scrub them aggressively when you finally shampoo. And if you’re heat-styling, don’t “camp out” with a flat iron right at the hairline. That’s the quickest way to turn a bright Money Piece into a dull one.
Product routine for Money Piece maintenance (simple, not a 12-step)
Shampoo + conditioner: stick to a sulfate-free, color-safe formula. Sulfates can pull color faster, and face-framing highlights show it first.
If you notice brassiness creeping in, add a purple shampoo no more than once a week. Leave it on briefly and rinse well so you don’t end up with a dull, over-toned front.
Heat + UV: always use a heat protectant before blow-drying or ironing, and use a UV spray when you’re outside for long stretches.
This is especially important for clients coming in from Scottsdale, Phoenix, Paradise Valley, Fountain Hills, Tempe, and Mesa. Our sun exposure is intense, and those front pieces get the most of it.
Please don’t DIY bleach around your face. If your Money Piece starts looking warmer than you like, we’d rather see you for a quick tone or glaze than have you battle it with at-home lightener.
When to come back: toner or glaze every 6–8 weeks keeps it fresh
A Money Piece doesn’t usually need constant re-lightening, but it does need tone support. Plan on a toner or glaze every 6–8 weeks to keep the color looking the way it did when we finished your blowout.
If you’ve ever had a bad color experience that left you with brassy tones or a harsh root line, you already know why this matters. A small refresh visit is how we keep things neutral, soft, and blended, especially through Scottsdale summers.

If something feels “off, ” tell us fast (and we’ll actually listen)
Most of the time, aftercare is simple and your hair settles in beautifully. Still, reach out if you notice sudden brassiness after a pool day, the front pieces feel unusually dry, or you’re not sure if a purple shampoo is helping or making things muddy.
“Cedric listened to what I wanted for hair color and style. I was not disappointed...color highlights were bright and beautiful and cut was perfect...exactly what I wanted!”
